Profile: Mohammad Anwar Anwarzai

Ambassador Mohammad Anwar Anwarzai, a senior diplomat of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan started his career as a civil servant in 1960.

He was born in Kabul in 1937. Graduating from Nejat High School (1954) and Law Faculty of Kabul University (1959), he completed his education in a special program designed for diplomats of developing countries in international relations and international law at the Oxford University (1970). He served in different capacities in the Archives Department, United Nations and International Conferences Department, Economic Department, Cultural Relations and also in the Political Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kabul.

His first diplomatic assignment abroad was in the Permanent Mission of Afghanistan to the United Nations in New York, where he, as a junior member at the mission, worked directly under the auspices of late Ambassador Abdul Rahman Pazhwak from 1964 to 1969.

The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan forced him and his family to become political refugees. He spent twenty three years in exile in New York. In the period 1979 to 2001 he was involved in promoting the cause of Afghanistan and Afghan freedom fighters. He delivered speeches, attended seminars, and US senate hearings.

Ambassador Anwarzai, co-founder and a former member of the Board of Directors of Global Partnership for Afghanistan served as Vice-President and Chief Operation Officer until 2005. The Partnership is currently active inside Afghanistan (see http://www.gpfa.org).

In February 2002, immediately after the Bonn agreement, he returned to Afghanistan and was assigned in the Afghan Foreign Ministry as Director of Fourth Political Department responsible for European countries. He became Minister Counsellor and Deputy Chief of Afghan Mission to the European Office of the United Nations in Geneva from 2004 to 2005.

Ambassador Anwarzai was appointed by His Excellency Hamid Karzai as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to Australia and presented his credentials to His Excellency Major General Michael Jeffery, AC, CVO, MC (Retd), Governor General of Australia on 24 November 2005.

Mr Anwarzai is a well known Afghan personality dedicated to serve Afghans and Afghanistan.

Ambassador Anwarzai is married to Fauzia Asef Anwarzai and has four grown-up children.
