
Ajmal
Khattak
is a politician,
writer and Pashtun poet from Pukhtunistan. He has had a long career in both the
anti-imperial movement against the
British in
Pukhtunistan and as part of the
National Awami Party in it's various incarnations in
Pakistan.
He served as member of Pukhtunistan Provincial Assembly
and Provincial minister in the shortlived NAP-JUI government
in 1973. As well as Member of National Assembly and Senator
in Pakistan's Parliament after 1988.
Within the National Awami Party he served as secretary general of NAP in the
1970's, however after Rawalpindi Liaqat Bagh Firing of March
23, 1973, he fled into self imposed exile to Afghanistan and
stayed there in exile for 16 long years.
Ajmal Khattak
enjoyed excellent relation with various communist Afghan
government during the Soviet accupation from
President Tarakai to
Najeebullah. He ended his exile in 1989 after his party
joined the right wing alliance the IJI with the,
Pakistan Muslim League in 1990 mainly due to the efforts
of
Nawaz Sharif. He also served as the President of the
Awami National Party after the retirement of
Khan Abdul Wali Khan.
The author of many books in
Pashto he has has written 13 books in Pushto and Urdu
including a History of Pushto Literature (in Urdu)
'Pakistan Main Qaumi Jamhoori Tehrikin, Da Ghirat
Chagha, Batoor, Gul auo Perhar, Guloona
auo Takaloona, Jalawatan ki Shairee, Pukhtana
Shora and Da Wakht Chagha. He was ousted as Party's
President in 2000. He has now retired from active politics
and lives in his village home in Akora Khattak.
